FALL CLUB RACE OCTOBER 6 2018
We all knew that we would be on the edge of some bad weather, but we finally got lucky and the storms stayed off to the west long enough to get two races in on Saturday. Unfortunately, only four boats entered for the weekend. The winds were 12 to 17 knots out of the SW with lulls down to about 5. The spinnaker fleet carried their middle head sails of about 110% which made for high pointing and quick tacks. Every one finished the first race in an hour or less, and Kurt Hagen in his Catalina 27 won in the Non-spinnaker fleet and Terry Casady in his Laser 28 won the Spinnaker fleet. The storms were getting closer after the first race and the Non-spinnaker fleet decided not to risk it. The Race Committee decided to shorten the second race to one lap of the windward/leeward course. Ted English evened things up with a win in the second race.
There was a potluck at 5:30 that evening, which turned out to be an intimate party of eight people. But, the food was good and afterward everyone went to the club house for a highly competitive game of Mexican Train. The storm hit about 6:45 and thundered and rained like crazy for several hours. Later, we found out the Grove airport measured straight line winds of 72 mph and I had 3.2 inches of rain in the gauge the next morning.
When the race crews returned Sunday morning, our new caretaker, Miami Phillips, had found a huge tree blown over in dry storage. Naturally, it fell on my trailer. Everyone decided to forego racing and clear the road to Shady Manor of the limbs blocking it. Miami’s chain saw was the only one that would start and he generously used it to saw off the limbs with everyone else pulling the debris out of the way. Thanks go out to Miami, Ted English, Claude Phelps, Mike Kadel and Jim Spear, with Jim using the winch on the front of his Jeep to move some of the bigger limbs that pinched the chain saw.
Thanks also to Shelly and Miami Phillips for service on the pontoon Saturday. Next weekend, 13-14 Oct, will be the last of this year’s racing. Skipper’s meeting is at 11 AM Saturday and 10 AM Sunday.
